Definition of Fair market rent:

1. Amount of money a property would rent or lease for if it was available at this time. The fair market rent is used by the Housing and Urban Development to determine how much rent should be covered through Section 8 for individuals with low income, and is sometimes used by tax appraisers to determine tax rates.
